What do I HAVE to do?
It might surprise you to learn that there aren’t actually many things you HAVE to do to be married. The Australian government requires the following things to occur for you to be legally married.
You need to lodge a form called a Notice of Intent to Marry with your celebrant at least one month before your wedding day.
You need to sign a No Legal Impediment to Marry at some stage before your ceremony.
You need to have two witnesses over the age of 18 to hear your celebrant say the Monitum, and you both say the minimum vows.
You and your witnesses and your celebrant then need to sign the official paperwork.
That’s it. Done. Married.
Sounds simple doesn’t it?
A legal Australian marriage ceremony can happen anywhere on Australian soil, at any time of day. All of this paperwork is your celebrant’s responsibility. Once you have chosen the right celebrant for you, they’ll help you take care of the rest!
